Lack of transportation can be a massive stressor for patients of Big Rapids and Reed City Hospitals. Many often face transportation issues resulting in barriers to care. The free transportation services, funded 100% through donations, give elderly and low-income patients access to medically necessary, life-prolonging treatments that they might otherwise forgo, in whole or in part, because of inadequate transportation.

Sometimes it happens in the emergency department where a patient is dropped off at the hospital by the ambulance with no way to get home after receiving lifesaving care. Other times, it's a situation where we need to transport patients to Grand Rapids for specialty care. Transportation assistance is also given when the patient has no one to help him/her and no money of their own. If patients qualify for help, assistance is given in the form of gas cards, MOTA coins, ambulance or taxi.

The average dollar amount for local transportation is $10 per patient. For patients needing transport for psychiatric care, the average price is $1,500 due to extended distances and car provider support in the transport. For a gift of $10,000, you could help 1,000 patients with local transportation. Or for a gift of $15,000 you could help 10 patients with psychiatric care transports.

The 2022 Spectrum Health Big Rapids an Reed City Hospitals Charity Golf Classic will raise funds to provide access to free transportation services for qualifying patients at Big Rapids and Reed City giving them access to medically necessary, life-prolonging treatments they might otherwise forgo because of inadequate transportation.
